Going Down

Some more thoughts on Jonah and what happens when we try and flee from the presence of God …

I am struck by the direction that Jonah is heading as he flees from God’s presence.  Usually in life we want to move up, “climbing the ladder of success,” or we want to move forward, “just get on with life.”  I don’t hear too many people talk about moving down in life.  Yet, this is exactly what happens to Jonah when he runs away from God: Jonah went downto the port of Joppa; Jonah went down to the ship; Jonah went down below the deck; and finally Jonah went down to the heart of the sea, down to the roots of the mountain.

That’s a lot of downward movement.  Ironically, the only one who could lift Jonah up was the very one he was fleeing from.

Some questions to consider …

  1. Am I fleeing God?  In what ways and why?
  2. In what ways is my life going down to the roots of the mountain?
  3. How can you make Jonah 2 your own prayer?
