“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” (Ephesians 3:16–19 NLT-SE)
Four truths expressed by Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians (The Deeper Journey, Robert Mulholland, ch.4) –
- loving union with God is being strengthened with power by God’s indwelling presence – the Holy Spirit – in our inner most being
- loving union with God is the indwelling presence of Christ in our hearts
- loving union with God is a life “rooted and grounded in love” – rooted in God’s cruciform love for us and grounded in our response of a loving abandonment to God
- loving union with God is being “filled with the fullness of God”
All of this must be God and other referenced. If it is self-referenced then it is simply another attempt of the false self to control and manipulate God in our lives. The question I am asking myself is this, Where am I in this movement of loving union with God?
