In 1st century Mediterranean culture boys were raised by their mothers until the age of 12. At that time they were expected to become men. One sign of a real man was that he could endure suffering and pain without flinching. In good 1st century fashion Jesus is led to the cross like a lamb to the slaughter. As you listen to Luke’s account listen to how silent Jesus is in the face of his suffering and death.
The challenge for the church today is to learn how, like Jesus, to encounter suffering and death in silence. In a culture that teaches us to react to suffering with greater force and fierceness we must learn to live like Jesus. Listen to The Passion of Jesus.
