The Fear of God

“For God has come to you in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning.” – Moses (Exodus 20:20)

“Give me 100 preachers, who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God and I care not a straw whether they be clergy or lay, such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of God upon the earth.” – John Wesley

What a strange concept – fear of God could keep me from sinning.  I’m afraid (no pun intended) that I don’t usually think in these terms.  God has been so filtered through Jesus and Jesus has been so filtered through culture that God has now become our homeboy.  Who’s afraid of a homeboy?  Perhaps we would do well to possess a little more fear of the one who can destroy both body and soul. (Matthew 10:28)  After all, the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. (Proverbs 1:7)
